This is the FAQ for the MANNET Homepages Server. If you have a problem, please see if the answer is contained within this file. If it isn't, you should check the mcb.homepages newsgroup and if necessary post your question there.
See the Terms and Conditions webpage for full details.
Your web address is taken from your nodename, therefore if your nodename is fred.mcb.net,
your homepages web address will be of the form:
http://homepages.mcb.net/fred
This can also be found on the connection sheet given to you by MANNET in the field HOST.
You must use an FTP client, eg ws_ftp
If you are using an FTP client, you need to configure your FTP client to connect to:
homepages.mcb.net
You need to login to your own directory on the server, therefore do not make an anonymous login as you would to most FTP servers. Use the value in HOST on your connection sheet as the username, and your Connection password for the password. This should put you in the base directory of your webspace.
If you are using Netscape Composer to write your pages, you could use the publish feature of Composer. You need to configure it as follows:
HTTP: or FTP: Location to publish: homepages.mcb.net/home/HOST
Use the value in HOST on your connection sheet as the username, and your Connection password for the password.
The introduction page must be called one of the following:
All HTML webpage files should end in either .htm or .html.
Check that you are using the correct username and password. The username is all lowercase, the password is usually mixed case.
You should use either:
gif files
or
jpg files
Do not use .bmp or .tif files as these create very large images.
Use a graphics package, eg Paint Shop Pro, to reduce the size of your images. In general keep each individual image below 30k, remember a 30k image takes around 10 seconds to download on a 33.6 modem.
There may be a problem with your permissions on our ftp server. Please email webmaster@mcb.net with details of your problem including your username and password.
From the cover disk of magazines such as Internet Works.
