Directions: From Ramsey, head toward Kirk Michael. After passing Ballaugh Wildlife Park (1 mile past Sulby) take the first turning on the right. Follow this road for approximately 1mile and take the 3rd. turning on the right. Follow this minor road for a further mile or so (a second minor road joins it after ¾mile). There is a small entrance to Close Sartfield on the right.

 

Car Parking: Yes, for ½ doz cars at least.

 

Habitat: Open meadows, peat bogs and willow carr.

 

Year round species: Lesser Redpoll, tits, Water Rail, Hen Harrier, Long-eared Owl, feral Greylags

 

Summer Visitors: Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcap

 

Winter Visitors: more Hen Harriers than you can shake a stick at! Merlin, Barn Owl, Peregrine.

 

Plants/insects/mammals of interest: Huge numbers of orchids in May and June – mainly Heath-spotted, Common Spotted, Northern Marsh and Common Twayblade with smaller numbers of Greater Butterfly Orchid.

Probably the best site on the island to run a moth trap, with over 100 species available on a good night. A good site for Holly Blue butterfly, alongside the boardwalk.

Brown Hare is the commonest mammal, but there is also a healthy (30+) population of feral red-necked Wallabies!! Introduced Red Foxes have also been seen here – despite the denials of both the Manx Government and Wildlife Trust.
